Been doing a study of 3 start and 6 start oil pump oiling of NHT LP/low pressure, HP/high pressure rocker shafts, There seems to be a variety of opinions on this issue, including a rather glaring set of declarations, in the last NOC news letter,
Coming up is the scrolling -no scroll and the oiling flats-no flats and their orientation and function.
May be a discussion at the next MESP (Motorcycle Engineering Science & Physics)...

While not many pre commando here in N.E..., the biggest AH HA moment was re-reviewing an oil pump chart with singles, early domi's(1.5" cranks that used narrow oil pump gears) compared to the 1.75" journals 650- on that use the "big" pumps.
3 start gears are early but 6 start generally began in 66. There is some evidence of earlier from the factory. The scrolled rocker shafts should always match the low pressure feed system and plain shafts are always for high pressure systems.
Around 66 there was a period the HP plain shafts only had a single small feed hole.Bad bad bad dump them, and put the late style with the "flat", which points away from the rocker ball end hole..
I don't think they make narrow pumps any more so make sure you stick with 3 start gears on big pumps on 1.5" cranks or you will over oil and possibly flood the head=smoke.
