Understanding the basic's of which engines and gearboxes are used in each version of rolling chassis, will possibly drastically reduce or eliminate some of the biggest mistakes and misunderstandings often made during repairs and restorations.
ENGINE From 1949 through 1969/70, the NHT engine variants were in a twin chain timing chest configuration. REAR/left-ignition- magneto or distributor or rear points or electronic ignition. FRONT/right-all camshaft- some early dynamo drive, some tachometer drive. From 1969/70 until the end in 1975 +/-, they were in single chain configuration in the timing chest. Combination camshaft and ignition It should be especially emphasized that all NHT engine started with whitworth(coarse), BSF and CEI threaded components. In the later commando engine series, some individual threaded hardware were selectively converted by design to UN threads. Caution and focused research is necessary to avoid damage. GEARBOX Two different series: 1 Early Norton brand and manufacture. 2 Late AMC brand and manufacture more to follow.....
