Some guys in the club may have been to my tech sessions at the shop, or at one of the national rallies. I've discussed Norton Twin balancing and balance factor, Most guys know how annoyed I get listening to the silly opinionators that don't have a clue.
Well kids the BS is gonna stop.......... EBAY has hatched a glorious egg. IF it all works out as hoped I will be getting a pair of RION VA-11 vibration analyzers for $3000. I've been tracking these for YEARS with NO results.....These items are coming out of the oil drilling industry for motor vibration diagnostics. These are like 2 Ferarri's doing chevy pick-up duty. I can certainly put them to much better use!!! The current RION product VA-12 are only $4500 EACH!!!! Christmas in October is here. Get the DYNO lubed up and ready to RUN |

Looking forward to your findings. I went through the balance factor exercise earlier this year and it was quite an education (and a time consuming one at that). And you are right, way too much mis-information out there. I ended up staying with the factory recommended 52% balance factor which required lightening the crank counterweight just a tad as the new pistons were significantly lighter than the ones that came out. I built an Excel spreadsheet to do the calculations - you plug in the component weights and it calculates the BF, or you can you tell it the BF you want and it calculates the weight you need to add or remove. I also made a balancing jig with ball bearings to support the crank, then weighed everything about 20 times before I was certain I got it right. Got L and R reciprocating and rotating weight variances to about 2 grams each, and L to R total variance below 3 grams as well which I thought was pretty good. Final verdict - I can't tell the difference! But I feel a lot better about it! I'm very interested in hearing how the vibration experiments work out as I will be rebuilding another Commando engine within the next year. PS - I broke in the new rings dry and they seated 100% within about 20 or 30 seconds. This was a new technique to me, and counterintuitive, but I listened to the masters and they were right - it works!
