As follows: when the bearing is pushed on the crank, it might leave several little scratches (in line with the crank shaft). Since I have myopia (extreme near sightedness) I don't need a microscope to see stuff close or "real close". Sure if one is blind or doesn't look or see, these microscopic razor blades make quick work of the seal surface touching the crank. Still looks great....I alway tell people to crocus cloth and polish the end of the crank real good after bearing installation. Then if the raised cutters are polished away, you may still have troughs that are not filled and leave a microscopic trench for oil to weep out under the rubber. I haven't gotten oil leaks but after many thousands of miles it is more like a vapor that catches dirt like the rubber dust from the belt drive. I have never had the problems that so many people talk about and "have to fix" with all kinds of high bucks breathers. Of course you need a fresh good seal and it also needs to be protected from the sharp keyway when installed. I've had for way to long a similar battle with gearbox breather justification. I did a substantial engineering exercise to prove you do not get gearbox oil leak from pressure. I may try a similar experiment on my soon to be assembled 88SS. Pressurize and put soapy bubble water on the crank to test for leaks. I have an extreme low pressure gauge (oz/sq in) and suitable regulator that I used on the gearbox test/demonstrator. cheers Dave |

Saturday we assembled Mikes crankshaft after a bit of remedial sludge trap cleaning in the cleaning tank. After assembly the drive side crank main journal was polished only to discover there was at least one larger scratch that will probably prevent a perfect oil free joint, At least we were able to remove a lot of sharp surface testure that would rip an oil seals surface to shreads at the microscopic level.
