In the recent past I stripped down a few valve springs out of the half dozen heads I have, and out of 3 so far NONE have the soft-large diameter spring packs.These soft springs are all that should be needed for the mellow cams on the early engines. BUT on none yet have I found any soft springs, and all show evidence of being previously worked on....some showing BAD work.

Communication With Les Emery @ Norvil revealed that the stiff/late springs came in in 1960 with the picket fence heads.
I wasn't going to argue, but I saw no particular need for stiff springs except for a new more radical cam called the SS for 88SS/99SS/650SS which became the stock atlas/commando cam.
