Did you know the Stieber 18 dogbone (rockers) in the starter clutch/sprag system are only rated for 4600RPM over run speed? The starter did not survive a series of dyno runs of a hot rod MKIII engine.
Recent starter over speed blow-up made me research the sprag again and I noted this tech spec and it's possible contribution to the problem.
Of course the melted alternator did not help much either with all the garbage and residue floating around the starter drive train.

Yeah, I noticed that when back when I was searching for a better price than the typical suppliers charge. I've bought them from VXB bearings for around $70.

It would seem that Norton used what would fit what they wanted to do rather than what would survive.

Hi Jim, Mike Pappas here. I still have the link you sent me on that sprag clutch (much appreciated). How long have you been using it, and any problems with it?
TIA, Mike the Greek

see post above!
I got a pair of these a few years ago around $55 or $60 ea
They are 18 dog bone/rockers.

Original was 14 rockers and it had a brake foot in it Not sure who makes them.
I don't know what ANIL sells, but Phil Radford told me a few years ago, Norvil is not selling the 18 rocker sprags anymore.

I have tried to find information on 14 rocker clutches and could not. I know the original was 14 as I remember thinking more must be, well, more better. I even tried using the specs to search but only came up with the DC4127.Are they the same number?

As for VXB: I found them looking for bearing for various pieces of farm equipment. I also found they had the bearings for a metal cutting band saw I had. The inventory is good for stock that moves but they haven't had some more obscure types leading me to spend dearly at Eastern Bearing
