At the risk of being an ignorant person.. Where is the ballast resistor on a 1970 commando? It is not by coils. Should I connect the EI to a power source that is live only when key is on?

Ballast resistor started in 71 along with 6V coils. I assume to coincide with the intended electric start feature that failed to be implemented. Norton never change back to 12 coils and finally used the ballast bypass in 75.
So all prior to 71 are dual 12V coils so no ballast.
EI should definitely be switched on/off by key.
Dual 12v in series can work but is considered as marginal. a dual lead 12v or 2 six volt coils is normally part of the conversion.
