I read in November 2017 Newsletter that LED headlights are polarity sensitive. Maybe some are but the one I bought on eBay in 2015 for my 1973 Commando is not. Nothing special needed other than an updated headlight bucket that had the Halogen H4 socket that my 1973 did not have. It works great, kind of a tight fit, but got it in. I read about someone who did it on accessnorton site and did the same. I do not have a pilot light any longer, but never used that anyway. Here is what I used:

This is probably a tech talk issue... I can absolutely assure you all LED's ARE polarity sensitive. However through the magic of physics disguised with mumbo jumbo of the marketing professionals you now have (incorrectly) a polarity insensitive light. Through engineering application of a bridge diode front end, the bipolar bridge steers the electricity to the unipolar Light Emitting Diode. The bridge diode is what makes it not polarity sensitive NOT the LED. This was described with chalk on the black board at the recent tech session and I could build one in the shop to demonstrate it in under 5 minutes. However, I would also warn NENO members how bad ACCESS NORTON forum is for accurate information. I have a lot of respect for moderator LAB (Les) but as the only paid (I believe) moderator he must be incredibly overwhelmed to try and correct all the informational inaccuracies. I think his primary job is to moderate fights and NOT to insure technical accuracy. I get nothing but resentment and hate if I open my mouth in rebuttal of some of the absurdity I hear on there. So I have taken myself off the active list there, as I don't have infinite time to devote to correcting or offering the correct information.

Thanks Dave, I should have posted this in the Tech section. I'm just a novice, but I guess what you are indicating is the LED unit I bought had what it needed to function with the stock Norton positive ground system even though the LED itself is polarity sensitive. All I know is it works well, wasn't that expensive and I did not have to do anything special with the wiring other than add the H4 plug. The brightness difference is substantial and I feel safer. I don't do much night riding. I was more interested in making sure I'm seen.
I'll also heed your advice and be very careful with anything I see on accessnorton. Thanks again, Bill |
