I am about to change the transmission oil in both Commando's (71 and 72). I would like to go to a synthetic type as I hear they have the ability to really permeate parts. Any thoughts on type, brand etc.?

I have a few thousand miles on REDLINE SHOCKPROOF (think that's how its labelled) smooth shifting so far. RPM (old ARMORY on Dover/Rollinsford line where you had the magic bus) sells it. i used it for years in my Road King with no probs. I even spoke to a tech guy from REDLINE and was told this was suitable for NORTONS (yes i know he would be biased but so is everyone when it comes to fluids!!). Plus it's RED (or closer to pink). anyway your inquiry should generate some action here - maybe??

just thinking...back in the day ('76) i used CASTROL products as spec'd in manual...think the gearbox was EP-90. Had 14k on my '75 when i sold it. continued using CASTROL products in my Moto Guzzi . had 65+k when i sold that - no issues. a lot more choices now (dyno - synthetic etc)

Since the late 90's I have changed to 75W-90 synthetic.
It is available as Mobil 1 and Valvoline SYNpower. They is likely no difference. The change from my earlier choice was dramatic, especially in very cold gear changes. Other brands of similar specification are probably fine also. Usually available at NAPA... |
