Hi Tom
If you bring your seat (or the whole bike) tonight to thursday nite "gearheads", as offered before, I can show you the considerations that will allow the seat to fit properly.. bent or unbent frame loop, good, bad or incorrect seat pan for your 850 frame, along with the correct seat buffers. will make the seat "fit".
Unfortunately gocomando comments were in the wrong place.

It was found the rear frame loop was reworked in the past and it was "short" a few inches. Second, it was not a commando fender which added to the alignment problem. A proper rear loop has been sourced and the seat alignment project continues....

and was finally resolved
