At the British Motorcycle Meet, I bought a pair of MKIII pipes and attached Dunstall mufflers. They were quite rust stained and rust pitted.
I had never previously tried to clean up chrome so pitted and rusted. Having recently refurbished a very rusty 1960's Walker-Turner drill press using gum turpentine and a variety of abrasives, it surprised me how well it turned out just adding gray alkyd enamel. Back to the Dunstalls...I started with the turpentine and just paper towels. I had learned of the mild abrasive nature of paper fibers back when I was doing field service work for Krohne at paper mills and saw what abrasive action paper fibers can do... The mufflers are turning out pretty good so far considering haw bad they were. Not sure where they will get used. My green MKIII may well loose it's current super rusty Dunstall's for a set of custom low level interstate pipes and standard norton style interstate mufflers. |
