Expanding my look at the wiring of the commando's. I have several here and have extensively examined them for the vital differences.

68-69-70 series one bike have some common criteria:
1. All run 12v coils, no particular difference if 20M3 rear points or 20M3S points on end of cam. 2. All have an amp meter in the headlight bucket, 3. Due to the beefy direct battery connection to the amp meter the harness has no break. IE the main harness goes seamless into the headlight bucket with no connectors. 4. 3 wires, power - ignition - lights, to the 2 position ignition switch. OFF - ignition on 6. Affirm the front brakes had wiring for a brake light switch, along with rear brake lights. NOTE: aftermarket harness' have two added wires run front to back for turn signals which were never originally there.... |

1. The Series 2A-1 71 commando had wiring changes converted to the ballasted dual 6 volt coils in anticipation of the "electric starter", which failed miserably. Added wires for E-start feature are "in the bundle", but not documented on factory schematic.
2. This model has a 3 position 3 wire ignition switch. Off - Ignition on - ignition+lights 3. Warning light assimilator replaces the ampmeter 4. Harness now has disconnect at rear of steering neck with bullet cluster. 5. Bullet cluster is needed due to new switch gear. 6. New switch gear accommodates new turn signal option, engine kill and headlight "flash". 7, Accessory power port (large size) installed on front of air cleaner housing. 8. Interpol lights and alternating horn wires available. NOTE: Aftermarket wiring harness' have removed the previous undocumented E-start wires

Series 2A-750 72& 73 and 2B-850 73 & 74 used the same harness.
The harness seems to be almost the same as for the 2A1 with these two exceptions. 1.The key switch has 4 position: OFF- ignition - ignition & lights - park mode which is tail lights only (ignition off) 2. Accessory port is a new smaller version and is mounted on the front right side of the Roadster oil tank/battery tray

1. The MKIII commando harness is a totally new design with different type connector pins mounted in plastic housings.
2.The circuits are very similar, but the switch gear is totally new. 3. The alternator is an upgraded design with two diodes and two zeners, but is not really up to the task for both the e-start function and "always on" headlights. 4. New design charging light indicator box or Canadian head light on control when engine running. 5 No interpol wiring. |
