Thank you Dave. I ran into several of the things you discussed when restoring my 72 and 73 Commandos. Seems the factory used whatever they had on hand - some from the prior year, some from the current year, and some from early delivery of parts for the next year's model. Felt like a forensic scientist tracing the path of the wires and decoding the colors (which were not 100% consistent either). but all n all, loads of fun!

These kinds of things are always interesting to me. Do you have any examples?
I have first hand evidence that the VIN plates did not change as some vendors have described...
It is very likely that parts change lists are not always correct or that repairs or upgrades have undone the factories original product configuration.

When did the Commando VIN plates start? My 68 VIN is stamped on the headstock

The vin plate is listed in the 69 parts supplement. It is thought the plates were actually introduced later in the 68 production period.
VIN plate starts ??? whats your # and work up from there...
